The ceremony involved with naming a ship is as old as… well, since humans first built a ship! Every culture has its version of the ceremony, some elaborate and some simple. Many are based in religion of some sort, asking the powers that be to keep a vessel safe throughout her time on the waters. We all have seen somewhere some well-dressed person or persons smashing a bottle against the hull of a ship. But what is it like to attend a ceremony like this? What really happens?
